World Cup 2024: England beat West Indies in Super 8, In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 round at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St. Lucia on Thursday, England swept aside the West Indies by eight wickets in the thrilling encounter between the two sides.

A target of 181 runs was set by England, and they reached the finish line in 17.3 overs.

The partnership between Phil Salt and Jonny Bairstow, whose unbeaten 97 runs in 44 balls made England’s first Super 8 innings a historic one, helped them edge closer to victory in their opening match against the West Indies.

There were 87 runs scored by Salt in 47 balls, including seven fours and five sixes, within the 87 runs he was not out. As a result of this explosive knock, Romario Shepherd faced the 16th over and was smashed by the batsman for 30 runs.

As well as Bairstow’s crucial innings, a vital 48 runs were scored by him in 26 balls thanks to five fours and a maximum.

In the fifth over of the inning, however, King was forced to retire with a suspected groin injury, after attempting to hit a shot through the mid-wicket against Sam Curran. By the time he left the field, he had scored 23 runs in 13 balls.

There was a stunning performance from Charles, who scored 38 runs in 34 balls while adding 54 runs in 41 balls with Nicholas Pooran, who had replaced King at the crease.

After 10 overs, the West Indies had been reduced to 82/0 and they needed a strong batting performance in the middle overs so that they could close out the innings. Captain Rovman Powell came up with the goods with a fiery cameo that included five sixes that earned him 36 runs.

The Windies batters, however, were kept under control during the last five overs, when England conceded 43 runs while picking up a couple of wickets along the way.

With a four and two maximums to his credit, Sherfane Rutherford remained unbeaten on 28 runs in 15 deliveries with the help of an impressive performance.

England’s best bowler was Adil Rashid who took 1-21 off four overs to claim the wickets for the team. Additionally, Jofra Archer, Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone all contributed a wicket each to the team’s victory.

Neither team had played before in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup and this was the first match they played against each other.
