Two political analysts weigh in on the ruling in the IDDAT case, In this day and age, when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received yet another big relief by being acquitted of the infamous un-Islamic nikah case, it was not surprising that senior journalists and political analysts weighed in on the ruling earlier this weekend. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were both convicted on Saturday, which was a significant victory.
An additional Sessions Judge, Muhammad Afzal Majoka, nullified the conviction of the former prime minister and his wife in an iddat case that had been brought by her ex-husband against the couple’s marriage against the former premier.
After a trial court found that a couple’s nikah was fraudulent, the cricketer-turned-politician and Bushra, the third wife he is married to, were sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs500,000 each by a trial court earlier this year.
Although the couple had filed appeals challenging their conviction, they had even petitioned the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for a variety of reliefs, that were not granted by the court.
In the eyes of women, the verdict is of immense importance
A journalist and analyst who spoke to Geo News about today’s development referred to the verdict as a “necessary decision” that holds immense significance for women, and he called it a “necessary decision”.
As a result, he shed light on the sensitive nature of the subject matter related to divorce and remarriage, especially when it comes to women in Pakistani society, who face many challenges after they separate from their spouses due to divorce and separation from their husbands.
There is no doubt that this decision, regardless of whether it was expected or not, was one that was necessary since the previous decision [the conviction] was a very bad one, as it was bad for women.
Khanzada explained that an ex-husband will wake up after six or seven years and realize his ex-wife has remarried during her Islamic period. He will therefore file a court case against her and her current husband, who will eventually receive a life sentence because of their actions.
Although the PTI founder made some wrongful statements on various occasions, he insisted that, as a result of the evidence and scenarios presented in this case, it could not be justified to convert it into a criminal case with such a harsh penalty.
As explained by the journalist, Maneka made some “extremely obscene remarks about his former wife” during his interview, which is why he thought the decision that was announced on Wednesday was the right one.
It is obvious from the facts that this was a case that was designed to be used as a political tool for victimization,” he said.
A defamation suit is on the cards against Maneka
Hamid Mir, a senior journalist and anchorperson who has covered the case extensively for the Pakistani media, has a strong opinion that Maneka succeeded in getting the trial court’s judge changed without him having to raise any hue and cry at the time, particularly after the previous judge had reserved a verdict.
In his view, had the verdict gone against the couple, it would have opened the door for other cases of this nature to come forward.
According to Mir, he said, based on his understanding, Imran and Bushra are considering filing a lawsuit against Maneka for defamation at this time, whereas Mir, on the other hand, has the right to appeal against the order in court.
‘Iddat case is most absurd and vile of all’
Although Khan’s lawyer Salaar Khan said that despite the verdict being a major relief for Khan, his release still depends on the disposition of other pending cases against him and he is not expecting that to happen any time soon since his bail was revoked earlier this week in the May 9 case.
I wrote on X that it is also going to depend on whether or not an arrest will be ordered in any other cases, and on whether or not the appeal will be pursued,” he wrote.
The iddat case, he said, was, perhaps, the one that was most “absurd and vile” of all the charges brought against Imran.
The seven-year sentence, which was based on the public audit of menstrual cycles of the woman at the time, has now been thrown out, and orders have now been issued to release Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.
