There is a risk to G-B due to melting glaciers caused by heat, Due to the thawing glaciers, as temperatures soar and a large part of the country sweats out in the scorching heat, meteorologists have issued an alarm warning of potential flooding in rivers and streams as a result of rising temperatures.
A warning was issued in Gilgit-Baltistan and surrounding low-lying areas about the threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) and sudden flash floods that might occur in the region.
Efforts have been made by all relevant authorities to prepare for and to prevent the potential deluge from occurring by implementing preventive measures.
A GLOF event is scheduled for this week in Gilgit-Baltistan. This development comes after Gilgit-Baltistan’s residents have already been notified that GLOF events and flash floods are imminent.
Over 7,000 glaciers can be found in Pakistan, making it one of the countries with the greatest number of glaciers on Earth.
As a result of glacier melting in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the past few years, more than 3,000 lakes were formed by 2018, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Over 7 million people live downstream of 33 of these lakes, which pose a threat to their health, safety, and welfare. Over 33 of these lakes are considered at risk of flooding.
One-third of the nation was submerged under floodwaters in 2022, when the monsoon rains caused unprecedented flooding across the country, which resulted in the death of 1,700 people.
There have been floods in Sindh and Balochistan provinces, which have affected over 33 million people according to Pakistani estimates.
