The PTA has announced a fine for the non-use of mobile SIM cards. People tend to have an excess of SIMs (subscriber identity modules) in Pakistan, which in turn results in scores of SIMs not being used and remaining idle as a result of the telecom providers giving out free SIMs (subscriber identity modules).
As a result of this constant issue, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to take action and has announced a fine of Rs200 for those who haven’t used their SIM cards for the last six months.
Efforts are being made by Pakistani, Azad Jammu and Kashmiri (AJK), and Gilgit Baltistan (GB) cellular mobile phone operators to introduce a SIM Disowning Charge of Rs200 on SIM cards which have less than six months of retention period as of January 1, 2024.
Consumers can use the following methods in order to check the status of their registered SIM cards:
- By visiting https://cnic.sims.pk/
- Sending an SMS with CNIC number (without dashes) to 668 (charges apply).
Furthermore, the PTA warned consumers that they need to return or disown all unnecessary SIM cards by the end of the year 2023 for free.
According to the statement from the telecommunication authority, this will help consumers avoid the charges associated with SIM disowning and contribute to the responsible use of SIMs in the future.
According to the body, a one-time waiver against the SIM disowning charge will be granted to consumers in the event that they have been issued a SIM without their knowledge or consent.
In order to ensure uninterrupted quality services for all telecom consumers, the PTA has made this decision to maintain its commitment to national safety and security.
