The largest solar farm is connected to the Xinjiang grid by China, Chinese state-owned company Xinjiang Electric Power announced on Monday that it had connected to the grid the world’s largest solar plant in Xinjiang, a region in northwestern China.

According to a notice posted on the website of the state asset regulator, China’s Power Construction Corp., the 5-gigawatt (GW), 200,000-acre solar farm came online on Monday, according to a notice posted on the website of the state asset regulator.

As a result of the project, a total of approximately 6.09 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity will be produced annually. Papua New Guinea could easily run for a year on that amount of energy if it had been pumped into the country.

A solar power tracker provided by the Global Energy Monitor has reported that the two largest operational solar facilities in western China were in the Ningxia Tenggeli desert solar project of Longyuan Power Group, as well as the Golmud Wutumeiren solar complex of China LĂĽfa Qinghai New Energy, both of which have a capacity of 3GW.

In the sparsely populated area of western China called Xinjiang, which is rich in solar and wind resources, giant renewable energy bases have begun to develop, with a large part of their power being sent over lengthy distances to the densely populated eastern coast of the country.
