Ten key moments of the Israel-Hamas war since Oct 7. A four-day ceasefire deal struck between Israel and Hamas on Friday comes into effect following Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7. A Gaza hospital compound at Al Ahli was targeted by an Israeli airstrike on Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of up to 471 Palestinians.

The Israeli government, however, denied all responsibility for the incident, blaming it on a misfired rocket launched by Islamic Jihad – an accusation that is strongly denied by the militant group.

The hostages have been freed

As the war raged on, a ray of hope began to appear after Hamas released two American hostages on October 20th, Judith Raanan and her daughter Natalie.

There were two other Israeli hostages released by the group a few days later, Yocheved Lifschitz who is 85 years old and Nurit Kuper who is 79 years old.

Israel’s ground offensive begins with tanks

In the night of October 26-27, Israeli tanks were used to attack Gaza in order to clear the way for the Israeli infantry to follow the armoured wall that was being built by the Israeli army.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, has said that the Gaza Strip will be the subject of a “long” offensive by his country.

Opening of Egypt’s Rafah border crossing

As the humanitarian crisis worsens in the Gaza Strip, Egypt has opened its Rafah border crossing with the besieged territory on November 1. Qatar, an Arab nation, brokered a deal between Israel, Hamas, and Egypt between Israel, Hamas, and Egypt.

In the wake of the opening of the border crossing, dozens of wounded Palestinians and foreigners, as well as dual nationals, have fled the war-torn Gaza Strip for refuge in Egypt.

Due to the dire humanitarian situation in the besieged territories, human rights organizations throughout the world have repeatedly called for a ceasefire in light of the incursion that led to worldwide condemnation.

Hamas-Israel truce leads to hostage swap

A four-day temporary ‘truce’ was agreed between Israel and Hamas on October 22 as a result of the United States, Qatar, and other world powers fiercely striving to achieve a ceasefire. Included in this truce was a hostage swap between the two warring factions.

39 Palestinian women and children were released from Israeli prisons on November 24th as part of a temporary ceasefire that came into effect on that day.

It should be noted however that Hamas also released a number of Thai nationals along with 13 Israeli hostages.
