Wednesday that researchers found there is a lower chance of men using erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra developing Alzheimer’s disease, based on a new study.
During the study, 260,000 males took the medication, and there was an 18% reduction in the odds of developing dementia-causing diseases among those who were taking the medicine.
It is still unclear whether there is any correlation between the two, however more research is needed.
Earlier this year, two new Alzheimer’s drugs demonstrated promising results in slowing down the speed of the disease in the onset stages of the disease.
The treatments for Alzheimer’s that have been developed alter the natural course of treatment by altering the protein beta-amyloid, which accumulates in the brains of those who suffer from the condition.
A new study published in Neurology found that men with erectile dysfunction who had used the drugs, and those who had not, had a greater chance of improving their quality of life. Researchers from University College London examined the prescription records of thousands of men to compare if the drugs had helped their condition.
The men who were prescribed the most number of prescriptions for erectile dysfunction medications had the lowest risks of Alzheimer’s disease, showing that a sustained use of erectile dysfunction medications may be able to protect them against this disease.
There is no proof that the medications themselves are reducing people’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease based on this study, according to the researchers, but the study may open up new research directions.
Ruth Brauer, the lead researcher of the study, stated “More research needs to be done to confirm these findings, in order to understand the potential benefits of these drugs, and to determine what their optimal dosage should be.”.
Besides experimenting on males, the researchers also plan to test the medication on females in order to determine if there is an effect.
