Seats reserved for SIC, A petition has been filed by the Sunni Itthad Council (SIC) – a party which was joined by independent candidates affiliated to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) – asking for reserved seats to be allocated to the party. The Election Commission of Pakistan reserved its verdict on Wednesday.
This hearing was conducted in front of a five-member bench, headed by Chief Elections Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, during the early hours of the morning.
There was a pressing need for the electoral body to take up the matter after President Alvi refused to sign a summary calling for the convening of a session of the National Assembly, which had been requested by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
Under the Constitution, the National Assembly was supposed to be convened within 21 days of the elections in accordance with the remaining reserved seats, but President Alvi maintained that the reserved seats should be allocated before the session was called.
A letter to the CEC Raja, requested by the State Information Commission (SIC), was consolidated with all the petitions filed by Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The consolidated petitions filed by various political parties highlight the urgency and importance of resolving the issue of reserved seats allocation. The Election Commission’s verdict on the matter will not only determine the composition of the National Assembly but also impact the functioning of the government. The decision carries significant implications for the political landscape of Pakistan.
