Pakistan-Australia Test series ‘discontinued’ on PTV Sports

There was an announcement on Tuesday that Pakistan Television’s Sports channel, PTV Sports, would no longer be airing the ongoing second Test match between Pakistan and Australia, which has been ongoing for the past few days.

There has been a reversal of decision by the channel, which comes a week after a directive from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry urging stakeholders to prevent betting houses or their subsidiaries from promoting their services through any form of advertisement during live coverage of sporting events.

X, formerly Twitter, was used by PTV Sports to share a notification with its viewers. “In line with the Government’s Zero Tolerance for Surrogate Companies policy, Pakistan Television (PTV Sports) has decided to cease airing the second Test match from Melbourne, which is scheduled to take place from December 26th, 2023, rather than the Pakistan vs Australia Cricket Series 2023-24.”

Moreover, the channel informed PEMRA and other relevant stakeholders about the issue, requesting that “brand placements of on-ground surrogate companies’ advertisements (virtual advertising) be removed.”. It went on to state that it had contacted its parent broadcaster and reported it to them, as well as other relevant stakeholders.

It added in the post that the series would be broadcast live once the matter had been resolved. PTV as a public broadcaster is attempting to resolve the matter in order to prevent future blackouts of such transmissions in Pakistani territory in the future.

In its earlier advisory on the matter last week, the ministry noted that more than one media outlet and channel, including Pakistan Television, was live broadcasting coverage of the Pakistan cricket team’s tour of Australia, leading to an “unambiguous violation.”.

According to the Information Ministry, in an earlier advisory, the government had asked all the ministries, departments, and organizations to refrain from making any kind of contract or agreement with surrogate companies illegally operating in Pakistan, especially in the print, electronic, and social media industries.

It is imperative that the ministry not only terminates all agreements with surrogate companies that promote betting palaces, but also reminds the outlets not to advertise in support of betting houses.

A list of known surrogate companies was specifically mentioned in the advisory, which had already been sent to stakeholders, in order to ensure that any unawareness would be corrected and strict and immediate compliance would be ensured.

Additionally, the ministry observed that at least two of the companies mentioned in the earlier advisory were able to display their logos uninterrupted during the live broadcast of the event which lasted multiple hours over multiple days and covered multiple days of the stated event.

Within a week, the ministry urged the stakeholder to ensure that your instant advisory is immediately complied with without fail, investigate the reasons for non-compliance of the earlier advisory, and provide a copy of this report to the ministry as well.
