Mars’ ancient river is probed by NASA’s Perseverance rover. Perseverance, a NASA rover sent to Mars in the early 2000’s, captured a 360-degree panorama of the planet which includes 2.38 billion pixels from the Jezero Crater as well as information on the ancient river deltas that once existed on Mars.
After 1,000 days of exploration on Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover is currently examining rocks from a river delta that dates back billions of years, created by a river delta that was present during multiple eras of Earth’s history.
It has been discovered that the Jezero Crater on Mars is being studied by scientists in order to discover if there are any signs of prehistoric life that can be discovered in its rock strata. Ken Farley, a Perseverance project scientist, is giving a guided tour of a highly detailed panoramic image the Mastcam-Z instrument captured in November 2023 that depicts the rover’s location at that time.
From what the rover science team refers to as ‘Airey Hill,’ the 360-degree mosaic consists of 993 separate images with 2.38 billion pixels, which provides a panoramic view from all directions.
As a result of the image processing, a portion of the rover is visible in the scene as well; as a result of this, it seems to be more deformed towards the edges as the image has been processed.
It is a software application that enhances colour variations in the image and boosts its contrast by enhancing colour variations. Since the modifications approximate what the environment would appear like under similar lighting circumstances as those found on Earth, scientists can use their everyday expertise to interpret the landscape based on their everyday experience.
