Is drinking coffee on an empty stomach bad for hormones

People love waking up in the morning and brewing a cup of coffee for themselves, but could making a cup of coffee every day increase your chances of having digestive problems over time?

Many people on TikTok, as well as other social media platforms, advocate refraining from consuming any type of caffeine before breakfast. However, for many others, coffee is a crucial part of their daily routine that must not be missed.

Coffee reacts differently to each individual depending on how he or she consumes it. The consumption of the product on an empty stomach may cause mild discomforts for sensitive individuals, such as indigestion or bloating.

Nevertheless, Bonnie Jortberg, PhD, RD, a nutritional scientist and associate professor of family medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is of the opinion that the idea that coffee is harmful to your health when consumed before breakfast is often untrue.

According to Jortberg, “Most people shouldn’t have a problem drinking coffee on an empty stomach if they don’t have a slight amount of stomach acid in their stomach,” Jortberg told Health magazine.

There are many effects that caffeine may have on the digestive system as well as the body as a whole, even if the effects of this beverage may vary from one person to another.

Coffee drinkers are mainly attracted to its caffeine content in the morning, however as a result of this caffeine, some individuals may experience acid reflux or indigestion during the day.

As a result of caffeine, the lower esophageal sphincter, which is the doorway between the esophagus and stomach, is loosened, which implies that the lower esophageal sphincter is relaxed as well,” Harmony Allison, MD, assistant professor of gastroenterology at Tufts Medical Center explained to Health.

The effects of caffeine are not only weakening the barrier between the esophagus and stomach, but also stimulating the production of stomach acid,” Jortberg said.
