The holy month of Ramadan is expected to begin in less than a week, with Muslims around the world preparing to fulfill their religious obligation of fasting during the blessed time of Ramadan.
This year, over one billion Muslims will fast during Ramadan’s daylight hours.
In accordance with The National News, the holy month begins about two weeks earlier every year. Half of the world will experience shorter and cooler days during Ramadan this year. It is important to note, however, that fasting hours vary across countries and regions, ranging from 12 to more than 17 hours in some cases.
Shortest fasting countries
The publication stated that Muslims in Chile, which is located in the southern hemisphere, will fast on average for 12 hours and 44 minutes during Ramadan, which is the shortest period of fasting in the world.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims in other countries in the region, including New Zealand, Argentina, and South Africa, will also fast for 12-13 hours per day.
Longest fasting countries
Finland, Greenland, and Iceland, which lie at the furthest point from the equator, are expected to fast on average 17 hours per day.
However, one might wonder how people in places where it doesn’t get dark at night manage to get to work so fast. Currently, there is no place in the world where you will be able to see the midnight sun this Ramadan, although some areas will experience exceptionally long daylight hours during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Muslims in such areas are allowed to follow the schedules of other cities, such as Makkah, and Saudi Arabia, for example, since it is neither possible nor required to endure a fast for an oddly long period of time.
In Saudi Arabia and many other parts of the Middle East, fasting hours will range from 13.5 hours to 14 hours every day, depending on the time of the year.
Tunisians will be experiencing the longest fast of any Arab country, lasting 14 hours and 29 minutes.
