The senior vice president of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) Sher Afzal Khan Marwat was arrested on Thursday outside the Lahore High Court (LHC), police sources and the party confirmed to Geo News.
According to police sources, Marwat was arrested on the grounds of a violation of Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance at the GPO Chowk on Wednesday.
The sources said that the PTI leader had been taken to an unknown location after being detained by the police and interrogated by them.
According to the party, Marwat’s arrest shows those in power were “worried” about the event.
There is also a sense of lawlessness in this. “Which led them to commit these unconstitutional, unlawful acts, it’s because they want to run from elections,” PTI said in a statement, without mentioning exactly who they were referring to by the word ‘they’.
There is no doubt that Sher Afzal Marwat should be released immediately, the party said, reiterating that the arrests of its top leaders will not sway them from their path to achieving “haqeeqi azadi (true freedom)”.
The PTI Chairman, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who was recently elected to the party’s top position, has also condemned the arrest of his senior party leader.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Batkhela city, Marwat was briefly detained less than a week ago, however, the police had denied that the PTI leader had been detained.
Marwat, on the other hand, has been reported to be on his way to Bajaur when he was stopped by the police at the checkpoint in Batkhela while on his way to Bajaur. Despite this, there was a large protest staged there by a large number of PTI workers, who had gathered there.
The law enforcement agency personnel were forced to allow the PTI leader to proceed towards his destination as a result of this incident. There was no arrest of him anywhere in the Malakand division, a statement from DIG Muhammad Ali Khan had said earlier.
