Imran’s candidate for PTI chairmanship is Gohar. Sher Afzal Marwat, a senior vice-president of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced late Tuesday that Barrister Gohar Khan will run for the top seat in the party in the wake of legal hurdles as the party heads towards internal elections. Imran Khan had decided against keeping the chairman’s post due to legal hurdles.
I am very pleased to inform you that the PTI will be nominating Barrister Gohar for the post of chairman. During a conversation with a private news channel, Marwat stated that “the chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party , Imran, has said that Gohar will be his candidate for the post. Imran is currently being held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail and is embroiled in legal proceedings.
It should be noted that despite the fact that several party leaders had said that Imran would not be running in the intra-party elections, they also claimed that the actual candidate would be announced later on. This was a rather unexpected development.
Imran’s tenure as the party’s chairman, which he has held since the formation of the party more than two decades ago, is expected to come to an end as a result of this development.
As announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the PTI’s Core Committee gave its formal approval for the intra-party election to be held within the given period of 20 days and within the limits set by the PTI. A party that fails to follow the rules will lose its bat symbol if it does not follow the orders.
The reason for Imran’s non-participation has to do with his disqualification as a parliamentarian for a period of five years based on his involvement in “corrupt practices by hiding the benefits he accrued from the national exchequer wilfully and intentionally” in the Toshakhana case.
The PTI has claimed that despite the announcement by Marwat and other leaders, there are no plans for Imran to step down from his position despite the announcements by Marwat and other leaders.
In a statement issued on X, the PTI strongly rebutted the “speculations” pertaining to the fact that a new party chairman will be elected by the party.
As he pointed out, “almost all of the important questions regarding the holding of intra-party elections are currently being discussed,” he said.
Having said that, this is an important development for the party as the country moves towards general elections which are scheduled to take place on February 8, 2024. When Imran remains behind bars, the party will find it difficult to secure votes during elections if he remains in prison.
