The CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, as well as British author, JK Rowling, may face grave consequences if Algerian boxer, Imane Khelif, succeeds in a lawsuit alleging cyberbullying, in which the pair are named along with other defendants, after she experienced harassment while competing during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Depending on the outcome of the case against Musk, there is a possibility the Olympic boxer will be sentenced to up to five years in prison and fined £214,000 if the suit is successful.
In a report published by Variety, Khelif, 25, filed a complaint with the French authorities on Friday against the online harassment she suffered from the day before her boxing competition in the mega tournament, according to the report.
As the Algerian boxer made her first exclusive statement after complaining about the famous personalities on the internet, she underscored the oppression she had experienced from the claims made by the tech tycoon and writer well known for his Harry Potter book series, who were also accessible through the internet.
The news reverberated around the world, including athletes around the world, political figures across the world, and even artists and stars like Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and it affected me.” Khelif told El Bilad, a news outlet based in Algeria“.
According to Musk and Rowling, Khelif was wrongly accused of being a “man in a woman’s sport” and this raised questions about his gender in the eyes of the public.
“Enjoying the distress of a woman in which he’s just punched a head punch at” was the statement that the famous author posted on her official X account, which was previously Twitter, following the fight between Khelif and Italy’s Angela Carini.
Musk, one of the most prominent billionaires in the world, responded to a post made by swimmer Riley Gaines saying “men do not belong in women’s sports”, writing “Absolutely.”.
In a statement issued on August 1, the Italian boxer announced that she had withdrawn from the Paris Olympics in the middle of a fight, after being hit by her Algerian opponent and suffering numerous injuries.
In addition, Khelif continued to discuss how she felt shattered after the comments overflowed on social media and how she was left devastated.
This was a very emotional event for me. I cannot thank the Muslim world enough for giving Imane Khelif that courage and her willingness to fight. The experience greatly affected me. I am not lying to you; it affected me greatly and hurt me deeply. I can’t describe the fear I felt. The scene was very frightening. Thank God, Algeria and everybody within the Arab world knew her and knew her courage and will.
I am very ashamed to admit that I don’t like getting involved in politics while playing sports. It seems like the politicians have used sports as a platform to get into politics. Sports and politics are two very different things. These politicians are oppressing me because they believe that I’m transgender.
There have been reports that the gold medalist’s lawyer, Nabil Boudi, has confirmed to Variety that both Musk and Rowling have been named in the criminal complaint filed against them.
“J. K. Rowling as well as Elon Musk are named in the lawsuit, in addition to the others,” Boudi told Variety. As a result of Trump’s tweets, and regardless of whether or not he is named in our lawsuit, he will invariably be investigated as part of the prosecution process.
In spite of the criticism she faced online, Khelif won the women’s 66 kg gold medal after she won the quarterfinals of the event and then revealed that she was gay after her win.
“I want to tell all of the world that I am a female, and I will continue to be a female for the rest of my life.”
