Giulia Cortese, a journalist in Italy, has been ordered to pay a compensation of €5000 ($5,400) to the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, after she left an offensive comment about her height on a social networking site.
According to the court, this incident, which was deemed to be body-shaming, took place in October 2021. Cortese was also ordered to pay a suspended fine for a remark she made while chatting with a buddy on Twitter, no longer known as X, along with the damages.
In response to the verdict on X, Cortese stated that the Italian government has a serious problem with freedom of expression and dissent among the journalists in the country. Meloni and Cortese have been involved in a court battle for over three years now, following the cross-posting of opinions on social media between the two women.
As recently as a year ago, Meloni was the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, which was in opposition. It was Meloni who sued Cortese when, for instance, his photo of Mussolini was published alongside a doctored photo he had taken of Meloni.
There was another tweet from Cortese, which stated: “I don’t fear you, Giorgia Meloni, no matter what you are, no matter what you are. I don’t fear you.” “I can’t even see you from my height of 2 meters (4 feet).”
There are a variety of media outlets that provide information about Meloni’s height, which varies from 1. A 53 centimeters (1.28 millimeters) and a 1.38 millimeters measurement respectively. It is equivalent to about 5 feet and 4 inches, or 63 metres.
The sentence will be appealed by Cortese, and Meloni’s attorney has stated that any amount paid to the victims will be donated to the organisations they belong to.
According to Cortese, on X in English, he acknowledged the plight of independent journalists in Italy, noting that he is hopeful there will be a better future for them. According to Reporters Without Borders, 122 journalists were facing legal proceedings in Italy, which was ranked 46th in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index, and that was the result of 122 journalists facing legal proceedings.
The fact that Meloni initiated legal proceedings against the journalists has made him notorious throughout the world. An Italian court ordered Saviano to pay $1,000 ($1,088) in legal fees and €1,000 ($1,088) towards the damages incurred by Saviano, one of the best-selling authors in Italy in 2021, after he deprived her of her dignity.
