The Indian foreign ministry has described the verdict made in Qatar as “shocking” and added that it will not comment further on the case but has promised to challenge it in court. According to sources, eight former Indian Navy officers have been sentenced to death for spying for Israel in Qatar.

A private company, Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, provided training and related services to the Qatari military forces as part of their contract with the company.

In addition to them, there were officers who had previously commanded large warships of the Indian Navy. A source told me that some of these individuals worked on extremely sensitive projects such as midget submarines using Italian technology that had stealth features that could be used by spies.

It has been reported that the men have been incarcerated since August 2022. The Delhi government attempted to arrange a release with the help of the consulate after they were granted consular access. A trial was held for the guys in March, and they were found guilty.

Their requests for bail were repeatedly denied by Qatari authorities, which resulted in their captivity being prolonged. As of today, a decision has been rendered by the Court of First Instance of Qatar.

There have been punishments handed out to the following captains: Navtej Singh Gill, Birendra Kumar Verma, Saurabh Vasisht, Commodore Amit Nagpal, Purnendu Tiwari, Commodore Sugunakar Pakala, Commodore Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that they are deeply shocked by the death penalty decision and are awaiting the full details of the judgment. It also said that they were in contact with the family members and their legal team, and they are looking into all legal options available to them.

In a statement issued by the ministry on Monday, the statement read, “We attach high importance to this case, and have been following it closely. We will continue to provide all consular and legal assistance in this case. We will also discuss the verdict with Qatari authorities.”

As a result of Meetu Bhargava’s arrest, she sought the assistance of the authorities to retrieve her brother who was being held in prison for crimes against the state.

After a post on X, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asked to step in, the first time she was asked on Twitter.

This is the pride of the nation that these former Navy officers are. I urge our Honourable Prime Minister once again, with folded hands, to take immediate steps to ensure that they are all returned to India as soon as possible, reads her post, which was tagged to PM Modi as well as Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah.
