During a deadly attack in North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district, a soldier embraced martyrdom, while three terrorists were killed by the Pakistan Army in separate intelligence-based operations conducted in Dera Ismail Khan and South Waziristan districts, according to a statement released by the military’s media branch.

As reported by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on November 20, 2023, the military conducted an intelligence gathering operation in the general area of Kulachi in the district of Dera Ismail Khan following which two terrorists were killed as a result of a heavy exchange of fire.

One terrorist was killed by the military in another operation conducted in the general area of Kot Azam in South Waziristan, according to the statement.

“All three terrorists killed in the past few days were also found to contain weapons and ammunition, and they remained actively engaged in a number of terrorist activities against security forces and innocent civilians,” said the ISPR.

An improvised explosive device of North Waziristan district exploded in the general area of Gharyoum, North Waziristan district, and a 26-year-old soldier – Sepoy Shahzeb from Rawalpindi – embraced martyrdom in the immediate aftermath.

There are sanitisation operations that are being carried out in the area to ensure that any terrorists present in the area are eliminated, as the security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out terrorism from our country and such sacrifices of our courageous soldiers in return reinforce our resolve to do so,” the statement said.

Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorism in recent months, with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant outfits intensifying their actions against security forces.

In response, the state has also launched operations to curb terrorism.

In a report released by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) in October of this year, the organization noted that in the first nine months of 2023, the security forces lost at least 386 personnel, which is the most in eight years.

As many as 190 terror attacks and counter-terror operations occurred in the third quarter of 2023, resulting in the death of 445 people and the injury of 440 others.

During the period between October 2007 and June 2009, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were the two main centres of violence, representing nearly 94% of all deaths and 89% of attacks (including incidents of terrorism and operations of security forces) found in the country.
