There has been a sigh of relief for dog bite victims in Sindh due to the development of a rabies vaccine made by Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), one of Pakistan’s famous medical universities, known as Dow Rab, which is an anti-rabies vaccine.

It is expected that this facility will initially be introduced in the Sindh province, and then it will be spread throughout the entire country. According to a spokesperson for the university, the vaccine will be delivered to the desired location within four days of receiving a phone call from the university.

A simple ceremony was held to inaugurate the “Dow Rab” of DUHS by Vice-Chancellor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy.

According to him, the Dow Institute of Life Sciences (DILS) at Ojha campus has manufactured from imported raw materials 30,000 doses of the locally-made ARV, which are offered to the distribution network through the network of distributors in the country. The ARV is made by the Dow Institute of Life Sciences (DILS) at Ojha campus.

The Quraishy expressed his determination that very soon he will be able to manufacture it using raw materials that can be acquired locally here in Pakistan. The raw materials we use are imported from China at the present time, and we are completely reliant on them. As a result, efforts are being made to produce another 170,000 doses of ARV, in the hope that this goal will be achieved in the near future, he concluded.

A number of people were present at the meeting, including DILS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Syed Izhar Hussain, Dr. Talat Roomi, Director of Marketing Tariq Shahid, Manager of Commercial Dow Ahad Wasiq, Director of Pharma M&P Mujeeb Ali Khan, Director of Legal and Administration M&P Munaf Lakda, Director of Finance Muhammad Tariq Khan, among others.

In an interview with the vice chancellor, he stated that the Dow University has started commercial production of anti-rabies vaccine at the Ojha campus of the university following rigorous research by the university and regulatory measures taken by the country. For Rs1,500, you will be able to enroll in the whole course.

In those days of the Coronavirus epidemic, Dow University was one of the pioneers in developing IVIG Immunoglobulin, with the use of which hundreds of Coronavirus patients got a new lease on life during those tumultuous years.

The Dow University and Muller & Phipps distribution network had already signed a letter of intent (LoI) in another ceremony earlier in the day.

Ashar Afaq, Registrar of Dow University, formally signed the memorandum of understanding under which the distributor will ensure that ARV Dow Rab will be available across Pakistan in a phased manner, on behalf of Dow University.

In Pakistan, an estimated one million people are bitten by stray dogs each year, resulting in an estimated 5,000-6,000 fatalities due to rabies as a result of these bites.

It has been reported that Pakistan relies heavily on the Indian market to supply almost all of its ARV supplies, and most of these are imported from that country, according to the National Institutes of Health Islamabad.

A dispute over the price of anti-rabies vaccines has led to a severe shortage of anti-rabies vaccines in Pakistan at the moment.

Due to the devaluation of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar, importers claim that the price of vaccines and other biological products has to be increased, although local manufacturing is also expected to stabilize prices due to the devaluation.
